How IoT Enables Smart Homes

By Jeffrey EtterPublished 8 days ago 3 min read

The Internet of Things (IoT) is steadily changing the world as we know it. It’s worked its way into countless industries. It’s also found a place in our homes - though you may not realize it. If you’ve used any smart tech inside the house, the odds are good that you’ve taken advantage of IoT technology.

IoT is essentially a network of connected physical devices capable of communicating and sending data as needed. For example, in a smart home, your phone or tablet may be the center of your IoT setup.

There are many ways in which IoT can help automate a home and help make it both smarter and safer. Read below to learn more.

Home Automation

Home automation is one of the biggest attractions for a smart home, and it wouldn’t be possible without IoT. Amazon Echo and Google Home offer smart lights and thermostats that can be remotely controlled or added to a schedule.

Maintenance

In addition to automating our homes, many smart devices can now help with maintenance. For example, IoT sensors can monitor the condition of specific appliances and systems, such as HVAC, plumbing, and even electrics. Once a maintenance alert has been triggered, it is sent to the homeowner to ensure a prompt response. All of these help reduce breakdowns and other significant emergencies.

Data Reports & More

As mentioned above, many smart home devices can alert a homeowner to potential problems. They can also provide overall data to the owner, giving them a better understanding of how their home is doing. Additionally, many smart appliances can do the same, providing reports on their condition and more. Some appliances can take this further, such as a smart fridge that sends alerts when certain household essentials are running low.

Security

There are more smart home options for security and surveillance, and people love them. Ring Doorbells are a common example, but even a more traditional alarm system is likely utilizing IoT to report breaches and other security concerns. This enables more real-time security coverage, which in turn expedites emergency response.

Smart home security can also apply to the newer models of door locks and garage door openers. These locks can be remotely controlled, granting or denying access as needed - even when the homeowner isn’t around.

Entertainment

Entertainment is probably the flashiest example inside a smart home, but it’s also highly desirable. Thanks to IoT, smart homes can now provide integrated systems via smart TVs, streaming devices (Firestick, Roku, etc.), and audio systems. Many of these tools can synch to your phone or use voice commands.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency tools are another smart home staple. As mentioned above, there are smart thermostats that utilize IoT technology. These tools can help decrease energy consumption and increase overall efficiency. Newer devices are even coming out to help with water conservation.

Lawn Care

These days, even smart devices can help with lawn care. Connected timers can ensure that the grass and plants are watered consistently. Smarter versions of these tools can even pause watering during droughts and other extreme weather.

Pet Care

Given how much people love their pets, it’s no surprise that we now make smart devices to help with their care. Smart feeders, treat dispensers, and even monitoring cameras allow homeowners to remotely monitor and care for their pets.

Health and Wellness

Believe it or not, IoT is even increasing health benefits inside a smart home. More and more medical devices can work with an IoT setup, providing additional care to those with specific medical needs. This can improve the quality of life for patients with specific needs who want to continue living independently.
