Whispers of the Deep: A Lesbian Retelling of "The Little Mermaid"

True Love Needs No Words

By Eva A. SchellingerPublished about a year ago 3 min read

In a realm beneath the waves, where coral castles gleamed and iridescent fish danced, lived a mermaid named Marina. Unlike her sisters, who reveled in the beauty of the sea, Marina's heart was drawn to the human world above. The stories she had heard about humans and their emotions ignited a longing within her that she couldn't ignore. She swore an oath to see the human land.

“Oh, when may I venture above the waves to see the human world?” She cried.

“My child, you may see the human world once you are seventeen,” her grandmother replied as she swam to meet her in the palace throne room. “You are but fifteen, my granddaughter. Patience, and you shall have your turn.”

Two years passed, and the day of Marina’s seventeenth birthday finally arrived. Heeding the advice of her grandmother, she chose to surface during the night, so as not to attract too much human attention. On a moonlit night, as Marina swam near the surface, she spotted a majestic ship sailing across the water. Onboard was Princess Seraphina, a vision of grace and strength. Marina's heart fluttered, and her desire to know more about the world above deepened.

Fueled by curiosity, Marina swam to a secluded cove where an ancient sea witch resided. In exchange for her voice, Marina was granted the chance to walk on land. The witch's magic transformed her tail into legs, and Marina found herself standing on the shore, her body tingling with unfamiliar sensations. She was found on the shore by a servant of the palace and brought in under her care.

Marina's path crossed with Princess Seraphina during a royal celebration. Drawn by the princess's beauty and kindness, Marina watched from the shadows as the festivities unfolded. Seraphina, captivated by Marina's enchanting eyes and silent charm, approached her.

Without words, Marina and Seraphina forged a connection that transcended speech. Their laughter and shared glances spoke volumes, and their bond grew stronger with each passing day. Yet, Marina's heart ached, knowing that Seraphina was betrothed to Prince Marcellus, a suitor chosen for political alliance.

As the wedding day approached, Marina's feelings for Seraphina deepened into love. She struggled to find a way to convey her emotions without a voice, resorting to gestures and stolen moments to communicate her affection. Seraphina, in turn, found solace and understanding in Marina's eyes, a connection that defied convention.

On the eve of the wedding, a tempestuous storm raged across the ocean. Marina, fearing for Seraphina's safety, braved the treacherous waves to reach her. Through a silent embrace, their hearts spoke louder than words, and Seraphina realized the truth of Marina's feelings.

In a courageous act of love, Seraphina confronted her family, defying tradition and choosing her own heart over duty. The wedding was called off, and Seraphina declared her love for Marina before her kingdom and the sea.

Marina's sacrifice had not been in vain. Together, they faced the trials of acceptance and prejudice, proving that love knows no boundaries. They returned to the depths of the sea, their love celebrated by the creatures of the ocean and the spirits of the waves.

Marina and Seraphina embarked on a new journey, exploring both land and sea hand in hand. Their love story became a tale of courage and resilience, a testament to the power of love that could bridge two worlds. And so, the mermaid and the princess reveled in their happily ever after, with their love lighting up the depths and heights of their world.

Marina's transformation, once a means to explore another world, had led her to discover a love that was deeper and more profound than anything she had ever imagined. In the embrace of her beloved princess, Marina found a love that was as boundless as the ocean and as enduring as the tides.
