Voyage Toward the Abyss
Or, Malikah's Expedition to the Edge of the Earth
Malikah peered out from the tugboat, across the horizon, watching the sunbeams dance over the vast sea in front of her. She knew she was approaching the point where the sea and earth ended, and she was ready to join the expedition to fall off the flat earth and explore the unknown world awaiting them.
No one knew what was on the other side; no one had ever returned from falling off the earth in order to tell the story. This venture was seen as a historical mission by supporters, who compared it to the Moon landing, and a suicide mission by naysayers, who saw the attention and media coverage as ridiculous.
Malikah saw it as the ultimate adventure.
She grabbed her wetsuit lying next to her, and moved into a secluded part of the boat, away from the rest of the crew. Stripping off her everyday clothes, she stepped into the black wetsuit and pulled it carefully up her tall, lanky body. She was now fully transformed into an other-world explorer, turning on her body camera to capture images to be telecast back to Earth.
“We are now approaching the point of no return,” bellowed the boat announcer over the PA system. “This is your final warning.”
The stern baritone quickened Malikah to action. Shaking her sandy brown dreadlocks one last time, Malikah and the crew approached the water’s edge, then toppled over into the dark, endless abyss of the underworld.

Tiburón
The swells are full and frequent this morning, rocking us from side-to-side – not like cooing babies in a cradle, but more like prey waiting to be swallowed by the unforgiving and the unseen. Saltwater sprays and stings my dehydrated, cracked lips and glues my too-long hair to my cheek when the waves crash against the boat. The water is crisp, but not teeth-chattering cold and is a welcome contrast to the intense sun rays striking my wetsuit covered body. I’m starting to get a little too warm and I’m realizing I should have left the top half off, but it felt like too much effort at the time. I look away from the vast, cerulean waters to see my dive buddy, Torres, stumble towards me with his tall, lumbering frame and bouncing, already-tied-back curls.

On Burning Bridges the Right Way
When one chooses or is forced to leave a group with which one has been associated for an extended period of time one of the most oft heard pieces of advice is how important it is that one "not burn any bridges" on their way out the door. This advice is said to apply no matter the circumstances (good, bad, or neutral) of ones leaving of the particular group. However, it is most often spoken of in the case of unfriendly or forced departures. In those instances, the idea is that the relationships (the bridges) one has nurtured within the group over time, are more important than any particular action(s) of any person(s) in the group that resulted in said individual being forced out against his or her will. In the case of large organizations it may be that the person(s) responsible for the forced ejection of the individual are very far removed from that persons actual day to day "life" in the organization, and thus do not have much of a relationship (bridge) to begin with, and thus would likely be at least partially exempt from the standard advice on the importance of not burning bridges. More commonly however, forcing an individual to leave a group against their will almost always requires the direct 'negative' intervention of one or more other individuals in the group that the leaver does know and usually knows very well. I use the word negative in this case only because from the perspective of the individual being forced to leave (the leaver) the outcome is (at least perceived to be) a negative. If it were not they would not protest at being asked/forced to leave. In most cases, the person being forced out of the group probably has some personal relationships with the persons whose interventions (whatever they may be) have in some way led to their forced departure from the group, and these relationships may have been positive, negative, or neutral from the leavers point of view.
