Un-nameable Thing

A short story

By simplicityPublished about a year ago 2 min read

Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. The fairies in hardhats begin their performance. A structured dance based on design. Rugged in nature, but not without exquisite skill. Their  archaic creatures chomp and stamp the earth transforming the landscape. A fairy, the puppeteer of each beast. Until, no longer a desert devoid of visible culture and inhabitants. The old tenants now traded up for new ones. The fairies in hardhats carving and forging a new world. until at last a structure stands manifested from the inticate dance.

At first the fairies were mistook for grave diggers until concept art gave new hope to the onlookers. As dusty holes and mounds turned to foundations. These onlookers began to understand the late night receptions were in the name of productivity as escape from the suns glaring stare. Which in the suns enthusiasm to illuminate could turn the best fairy to a mummy with no potion or elixir to recesitate. They dance for the king, promising an oasis in the desert. An oasis that once backed with gold would shed it's miraged appearance and stand as the empire rightfully built for a king of his stature. Lending dreams and visual stimulation to the mermaids who must view from a far or the nymphs that check through their portals afraid to seduce the king or his court. All wait in anticipation as materials materialize into hanging gardens and a reflective mirrored lake that snakes its way across the landscape. An omage to the surrounding beauty. By the time those in hardhats are done a massive complex daring one to try to forget the power of it's empire becomes the dance itself within itself.

After the hardhat fairies, came the Gnomes. Wizards of the terrain. Their dexterous hands refine and fine tune the mechanics of the circuits. Bringing light with a switch and tricks of sustainability to keep the empire strong for years after the first inhabitants have joined the dust of the earth.  Touches that add magic to an already magical entity.

Behind the Gnomes like a scene from Disney's fantasia comes the mops and rags polishing and shining. The last step in bringing phantasia to the people. Giving illusion to welcoming cohesion through sparkle, shine, and crystal clear surfaces.

By the end of the dance, a spell is cast over the kingdom. Hypnotizing all. A mesmerizing spell, hoping to be cast on neighboring communities. Powerful enough to reach the farthest of empires or desires.

A metamorphosis so striking it lends a home to any homesick with beaches, mountains, desert and snow or an adventure away from the norm. A converging of elements, usually in contrast, working together for gratifications many forms. Usually otherwise hidden or ignored. Trying to capture and lure those in search of the un-nameable thing. A need? An experience? A new future?

Every night at midnight, the purple clouds came out to dance with the blushing sky. The stories presenting themselves to a girl sitting on her stoop. The buzz from the pink neon sign for 'Candy's Shanty' paints the environments hues differently. The sky blushes at the images revealed. The stars even peek through, also watching the dance of clouds. A bubble cartoon of shapes. Really, triggers to the onlooker breathing life into these ghosts. It's on this stoop that the story of the kingdom presented itself. A distraction from her life. Her loss. Every night at midnight her eyes look to the sky in search of the un-nameable thing.
