Through the Wall

Anyone could be listening

The cold, damp passageway was the fastest way through to the rooms without alerting the Royals of their presence. The castle was their pride, and how dare someone as lowly as they enter the room. The mere servant was not worth their time, and impossible tasks were always getting the work done. The hustle through the walls was the route, as the kitchen was just a short distance away.

The slickness of the leaks did not help as they passed another room when Crispin slipped and fell; both just laughed at the incident but fell silent. Faint voices were heard beyond the wall where a beautiful tapestry was hanging. Silently, both rose to listen to the conversation. Voices were heard as whispers through the holes. It was two of the top servants in the nearly empty throne room.

Florian put his ear to the wall, trying to hear, and put his finger over his mouth for silence. If they were discovered, it could mean the dungeon. Crispin slowly went up to the wall to hear the conversation, too. Both heard “poison for the old man, the King.” “For his son a trip he shall never return,” the whisper continued. “Their cousin William will be next, then our power cemented in history,” the voices continued.

Both Crispin and Florian looked at each other as their eyes grew big. Then Florian shrugged his shoulder and placed his hands like a crown on his head. He then wiped his hands together to eliminate the King and his even more awful son. Crispin just shook his head and raised his nose like William, the nephew.

Florian looked around and realized it would be worse under the new ruler. Each just looked at each other, and Crispin raised his finger while signaling, telling the King himself. Florian still smirked and rolled his eyes in agreement. Florian then acted like he was running, as if they could both just leave and bite his lips. Crispin just looked at him, his arms waving to go where in the kingdom.

Florian just looked puzzled. Both just stared at each other again, trying to be silent, and yet come up with a plan. Suddenly, a rock dropped from the inside of the wall. The voices stopped, and steps started to head towards the tapestry and started to investigate the wall. Crispin and Florian gently went to the floor and looked at each other. When nothing was found, both men went off into another room.

Crispin started to open his mouth as Florian put his hand over his mouth. Florian pointed to his ear and the other side of the wall. He just shook his head in understanding. Both just realized it was silent for too long, and Florian pointed to the way they were going, and both started silently walking as fast as they could out of there. Both ducked into a small opening and heard footsteps in the same corridor.

As the footsteps passed, Crispin poked Florian and pointed to an alternate route out of the place before they were discovered. Florian nodded his head and scampered down a different path. The hallways grew darker as they went their quickest ways through the dusky halls. The thought they had been discovered swept through their minds. This could be all turned on them, and they could be executed for it. Crispin and Florian made it to the kitchen and took a deep breath.

Crispin only had to look at Florian and motioned a crown, and both went to the steward of the King. Florian thought they should not but went along with it anyway.
