The Veiled Champion: A Princess's Resolve

Tales of leadership and pride

By Santiago SchwarzsteinPublished about a month ago 3 min read

Princess Elowen of Eldoria gazed out of the high castle window, her eyes weary from the daily parade of suitors.

Every day, lines of men flocked to the castle to claim her hand, bringing gifts, boasting of heroic deeds, and promising kingdoms. Yet, each suitor left her unimpressed, treating her like an object or a prize rather than a person.

Her father, King Aldric, nearing the final years of his life, pressured her to choose a husband and secure the future of the kingdom.

One evening, frustrated by the superficiality and arrogance of her suitors, Elowen devised a plan.

She approached her father with a request. "Father, let us organize a grand tournament here at the castle. The man who wins the tournament will earn my hand in marriage and become king of Eldoria."

King Aldric, though hesitant, saw the wisdom in her words. "Very well, Elowen. Let the tournament be announced."

The announcement spread like wildfire throughout the kingdom and beyond, drawing warriors from far and wide. When the day came, the castle grounds buzzed with excitement, crowded from dawn already.

Before the event, Aldric seeked her daughter at her tower. "We must go, daughter," he told her. However, Elowen politely refused, as she would watch from her tower window.

The tournament began with great fanfare, the townsfolk cheering and drinking, eager to witness the spectacle. The first few fights passed, one more exciting than the other. The crowd was jubilant, and the king was so entertained he almost forgot the true purpose of the entire event.

In the last fight of the first round, a knight in black armor caught the king's attention. The knight showed no skin, his figure thin and lean. Despite his lack of intimidation, he moved with a grace that set him apart.

Round after round, the black knight emerged victorious, his skill and agility surpassing that of his opponents. His mysterious presence stirred whispers among the crowd, but none could deny his prowess.

Eventually, he faced Prince Thaddeus of the neighboring kingdom of Thalindor in the final bout.

The fight was thrilling, each strike and parry eliciting gasps from the audience. The black knight's movements were swift and precise, matching the prince's brute strength with agility and cunning.

After almost an hour of fighting, and with both contenders exhausted, the black knight finally managed to hit Thaddeus in the head with his sword's pommel, knocking him out.

King Aldric, both relieved and curious, approached the black knight. "Congratulations, noble knight. You have won the tournament. Now, remove your helm and reveal yourself to your future queen," he said, waving his hand at the castle's tower.

The black knight obliged, lifting the helmet from their head. Gasps echoed through the crowd as Princess Elowen's face was revealed, her hair cascading down her shoulders.

"My people," she began, her voice strong and clear, "I am as strong as any man to fight, and so I am as strong as any man to lead this kingdom."

The crowd stood in stunned silence, then erupted in cheers and applause. King Aldric, his eyes filled with a mix of pride and anguish, nodded to his daughter, recognizing her strength and resolve. In the end, a timid smile appeared on his face.

Months later, Queen Elowen rules Eldoria with grace and wisdom, leading her kingdom to prosperity.

She honors the memory of her father, who passed peacefully, confident in the knowledge that his daughter was a capable and just ruler. Elowen remains unmarried, her heart and mind dedicated to her people and the legacy of Eldoria.

As to whom will be her heir, nobody can say for certain. Maybe, when the time comes, a tournament will be announced.
