Morgana le Fay knelt next her lover Accolon, weeping. He was dead, from a fatal wound inflicted by Arthur. She looked around the battlefield, where countless bodies lay slain. This was Arthur’s doing. He had so ruthlessly persecuted the old ways and the old religion that many had revolted against him. He slaughtered those that did.

“It was never supposed to be like this,” she whispered, gently placing her lips on Accolon’s in a final kiss. Merlin stood behind her, hand on her shoulder.

“No child, it was not. Listen to me. The prophecy foretold the blood of Uther Pendragon claiming the rightful rule of Britain.” He paused. “It never mentioned a son.”

Her whole body shook with a sob. Merlin continued.

“You are Uther’s daughter with the Fay Queen Igraine. Your mother’s people forged Excalibur. That same magic runs through your veins. In your hands, that sword would wield unimaginable power. Take it from Arthur and unite Britain”

“Accolon is dead; I would rather fall upon Excalibur.”

“Scabbard and sword have the power of life and death. With your magic, it can bring him back, all of them. Come, we must devise a plan for you to steal it.”

    Brilliant!

  • I took some liberty in my short retelling of the Arthurian Legend in regards to the backstory and motivations of certain characters. Enjoy!
