A young man and a young girl fell in love one day, but because he was from a poor family and the girl's parents weren't too happy, the young man decided to court both of them. Eventually, the parents realized that he was a good man and deserving of their daughter's hand in marriage, but there was a catch: the man was a soldier. Soon after the war broke out, he was sent abroad for a year. The week before he left, the man knelt on his knee and asked his lady love, "Will you marry me?" She wiped a tear, said yes, and they were engaged.

However, they agreed that when he returned in a year, they would would get married, but a few days after he left, tragedy struck. The girl was in a serious car accident that involved a head-on collision. When she woke up in the hospital, she saw her mother and father sobbing, and she knew something wasn't right. Later, she learned that she had suffered a brain injury, with damage to the part of her brain that controlled her face muscles, resulting in a disfigured once-beautiful face. She sobbed as she saw herself in the mirror, thinking, "Yesterday, I was beautiful today, I'm a monster." Her body was also covered in numerous unsightly wounds. At that point, she decided to break their engagement because she knew her fiancé would no longer want her.

The soldier wrote to her for a year, but she didn't reply. He called her numerous times, but she didn't pick up. Finally, after a year, the mother entered her room and announced that her son had returned from the war. The girl screamed, "Please don't tell him about me, don't tell him I'm here." The mother then announced that her son was getting married and gave her a wedding invitation. With great sadness, the girl opened the invitation and saw her name. Perplexed, she asked what this was. At that point, the young man entered her room carrying a bouquet.

With flowers, he asked her as he knelt next to her, "Will you marry me?"

The man added, "Without your permission, your mother sent me your photos. When I saw your photos, I realized that nothing has changed. You're still the person I fell in love with. You're still as beautiful as ever because I love you." The girl covered her face with her hands and said, "I'm ugly."
