Grateful they survived the chemical plant explosion years ago when Maya lost her parents and sisters, the sorrow is heavy as Maya and Ira enjoy bread and spiced tea before their wedding. Maya paints her fingernails sunshine-yellow, and her spirit ascends as Ira admires her heavenly choice.

“Sunshine of my life,” says Ira. He gathers her in his arms. “My beautiful bride.”

Months later, Maya’s baby girl is born without fingers. Maya stares at her own polished nails, and her spirit descends, realizing her baby will never wear sunshine-yellow polish or any polish.

“Pollution,” Ira whispers.
