Shadows in the Dark

A Tale of Midnight Dread

By NyxPublished 7 days ago 1 min read

Every night, Sarah battled her fear of the dark. Her rational mind knew there was nothing to fear, but the irrational whispers of childhood terrors lingered in the shadows.

One stormy evening, as lightning crackled and the power flickered, Sarah found herself alone at home. With each flash, the world outside vanished, plunging her into darkness. The thunder roared like a monstrous growl, echoing through the house.

In the dim light of a flickering candle, Sarah retreated to her bedroom. She had always felt safe in her room, with its familiar surroundings and comforting nightlight. But tonight was different. Tonight, the shadows seemed to dance and twist, elongating into grotesque shapes that flitted across the walls.

Sarah squeezed her eyes shut, trying to block out the unsettling sight. But when she opened them, she saw a figure standing in the corner of her room. It was tall and thin, its features obscured by darkness. Fear froze her in place as she watched it slowly move closer.

She blinked hard, hoping it was just a trick of her imagination. But the figure continued to advance, its movements jerky and unnatural. Panic surged through Sarah as she realized there was no escaping it. It was as if the darkness had taken on a life of its own, feeding on her fear.

Desperate, Sarah reached for her phone, fingers trembling as she fumbled to turn on the flashlight. With a click, the room flooded with light, and the figure vanished. Gasping for breath, Sarah scanned the room, finding nothing but her own shaking reflection in the mirror.

Relief washed over her, but the memory of those moments lingered like a chill in her bones. From that night on, Sarah slept with every light in the house on, afraid that the darkness held more than just shadows—that it held something watching, waiting for the lights to go out again.
