"Where are we?" the researcher panted to the young girl.

"Not sure that matters much anymore," she answered. More rubble raged its ruin.

"It wasn't my fault," the researcher said. He wanted to say the money was too good.

"We all say that. Sometimes we even believe it." Then she grabbed his arm and hauled him out of sight. Just in time: A giant face loomed.

Though made of other people, it thought itself a giant in its own right. It saw with their eyes and worked with their bodies. No heart of its own.
