“Hey Mum, can I ask you a question?” Allan asks.

“Sure honey, what do you want to know?”

“At school today the teacher was telling a story but I was running late and missed the start of her narrative. Something about a gallon, whatever that word means.”

Mum chuckles. “I’m not surprised you’ve never heard that before Allan. Your teacher must be quite old to be throwing it around. It’s how they measured things back in the day, things like petrol. For example, there’s almost 4 litres to a gallon, if that helps. Oh boy, now I’m showing my age.”

This drabble has been written as part of the daily Drabble Drop challenge and today's random word, that must be included in the drabble, is 'gallon'.

Wikipedia defines a drabble as follows :

A drabble is a short work of fiction of precisely one hundred words in length. The purpose of the drabble is brevity, testing the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful idea in a confined space.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Oh wow, I didn't know that gallon isn't being used anymore. Loved your drabble!
