Banu Akhtar: A Story of Resilience and Determination

Banu Akhtar has not had two hands since birth. When she was 12 years old, she wanted to go to school like other girls. Her father told her, "If you can write your own name by today, I will admit you to school." She managed to write it in just one hour with the help of her thumb and forefinger. The next day, her father admitted her to school. Her school was a little far from her home. A public representative in their area used to take her to school by bicycle every day and bring her back home by bicycle every day. Thus, her education started, and she studied until class VIII.

Since birth, she has faced various social and family obstacles. Her own mother did not breastfeed her due to her disability. People around her looked at her differently. Other children were afraid to play with her because she had no hands. They were four sisters and one brother. Banu was the eldest among them, but she was the most neglected member of the family.

When she was in class seven, she was introduced to a man named Asaduzzaman Noor through a mobile phone number. Gradually, a friendship developed between them and eventually a love affair blossomed. Banu provided a lot of financial support to Asaduzzaman Noor to help him pass his Masters from Intermediate. Asaduzzaman promised to marry Banu if he could get a job.

When Banu requested the Ministry of Culture on World Disabled Day, they offered Asaduzzaman a job. Asaduzzaman married her as promised. A son was born in their house. But after that, Asaduzzaman changed his behavior. He left Banu and married another woman. Banu continued to spend her days with her son very hard. While disabled people like her often earn a living by begging, she never wanted to beg. She didn't give up.

She learned tailoring and creating beaded showpieces on her own. She didn't have to take any training anywhere. Her beautiful showpieces look so stunning that they catch anyone's attention. The showpieces made by her became very popular among people. Currently, she receives many advance orders. She and her son get by very well with the income she now earns from selling showpieces.

Now, Banu has no complaints against her husband. She always prays to God for her husband. She now only thinks about how to build her son's future.

"Hands can never stop you."
