She closed the book and started to cry. Why wouldn't her life be like the girl's in the book; happy and easy? Her tears began running down her face, but she didn't bother to wipe them away. She just wished things would get easier for once. But no matter how hard she tried, she was still stuck with the same horrible feeling of being in the wrong place. She could feel it all over her body as if it were a real physical thing. A chill ran through her, and she shivered involuntarily. The air felt so frigid against her skin as if her heart wasn't beating right inside of her chest and instead seemed to be slowly freezing up. She hated this feeling. She didn't want it at all.

She needed to escape from her reality to let go. Let go of her family blaming her for thinking differently, for her boyfriend breaking up with her for another person, for life making her work twice more than her family and friends. She needed to move on.

So she left the room and got in her car. She just started driving with no destination in mind. Her thoughts were interrupted when suddenly she hit something, her head jerked to her side, and the car came to a stop. Complete silence fell. She looked in the mirror, and there was no other car. She felt dread filling in her body and a sense of panic taking hold of her mind.

This can't happen here. Not here, not now. She got out of the car to see what happened. Nothing was moving except the wind, blowing her hair in different directions. The car was intact. She walked around the car but couldn't find anything out of the ordinary. She opened the back door, but nothing fell out.

"Maybe I hit a tree or something?" She started noticing her surroundings, and there weren't any trees anywhere. She thought she saw trees before. Everything was now bare and barren. Her gaze fell upon a small path to the right of where her car stopped. It appeared to lead somewhere, but it was empty too. Was she dreaming? Was she dead? Or alive? There was only one way to find out.

"This is some kind of messed up joke, isn't it?" she mumbled under her breath. "If I'm going to die, you're giving me hell for sure. Just make this all stop!" Her voice became higher as she finished speaking the last sentence.

Then she started walking down the path. She had a feeling like she was meant to walk there. No sign of life or anything. She didn't understand. This wasn't normal. But then, without warning, she was in front of a beautiful frozen pond. No movement. What was going on?

She thought about turning back, but something didn't let her.

She sighed and sat down. Maybe this is the escape she wanted. A bit too cold, though. Couldn't the universe send her to a warm beach? She stared across the lake but didn't see any sand anywhere. Maybe she imagined it.

Then she heard a splash; she snapped her head towards it. She watched as something black moved, and it took form—a woman. The woman stood in the middle of the lake, looking at her. A beautiful white dress covered her body. It looked like a nightgown. Her dark brown curls surrounded her beautiful face, and her pale skin gave off a soft glow that made her look like an angel.

The woman smiled at her and extended her hand as if beckoning her closer. Slowly she got on her feet and inched forward. She stopped beside the woman and glanced at the frozen water and then back at the woman. The woman smiled at her again. This time it was different. It was brighter. Happier.

Then she heard the lake whisper: "Welcome home, princess!"
