Pebbles skitter away beneath my palm as if even they don’t want to get too close to the Edge. “Rye—come back!”
Rye shifts to face me—pierces me with his inevitability. Of course he’ll come back, his gaze says. There’s nowhere for him to go. “Anya, I was right. It’s crumbling. There’ll be no barrier at all soon.”
Our fathers helped build the Wall. We’re the only ones who know of its weakness.
Rye stares down down down at Beyond with a hunger and I see it—he almost wants to jump, just to see if he could fall.
