Missing and murdered indigenous woman

Our stolen sisters

Missing and murdered indigenous women.

There is an epidemic in Canada that many are unaware of; the epidemic is, our indigenous women keep going missing or found murdered.

Indigenous Peoples are at risk six times higher than any other race to end up missing and murdered. In a study done in 2016, there were 582 documented cases since the 1960s. With reason to believe the numbers are higher due to the most vulnerable woman not being reported or they got reported and the RCMP not taking it seriously.

British Columbia has the highest number of missing and murdered women across Canada. It is the home of a serial killer Robert Pickton a pig farmer from Coquitlam who was picking up sex workers in Vancouver's downtown eastside and bringing them back to his pig farm, where he murdered them fed them to his pigs. It's believed he was responsible for 49 women who disappeared from 1983 to 2002, when he was finally arrested on February 6, 2002, when a rookie cop investigating a firearms complaint discovered articles of clothing and other items belonging to a missing woman.

Then there is the infamous Highway 16, also known as The Highway of Tears, a 725-kilometre corridor stretching between Prince George BC and Prince Rupert BC, where an estimated 80 women disappeared or were found murdered dating back to 1970. Proposed explanations for so many years of these crimes happening and no arrests are due to poverty, drug abuse, domestic violence, and disconnect from traditional culture and families being torn apart from the foster care and residential schools. Poverty is a big part of many women being unable to own vehicles, so they hitchhike, making them fall victims to a serial killer who takes advantage of the soft soil, many wild animals and how isolated it is. The first investigation by the Rcmp to start looking at the cases as possibly being linked was done in December 1998. Accounts vary on the exact number of victims according to the RCMP project E-Pana list the number is fewer than 18 E-Pana also includes a large portion of people not related to the highway of tears. Aboriginal organizations believe the number of missing and murder is above 40.

There is no explanation as to why the indigenous are more likely to go missing then any other race yet they continue to vanish at an alarming rate.

Sadly most of the cases will continue to remain unsolved and the guilty will never be brought to justice. The only thing we can do is keep bringing awareness to these cases and direct the vulnerable to resources able to provide services that will help them from taking risks that could put them in the hands if a serial killer.
