In the quiet town of Mill Creek, Utah, a seemingly innocent friendship evolved into a harrowing tale of betrayal and deceit. This is the disturbing story of Rachel and her best friend, Janie, whose actions would shock everyone who knew them. This article details the events that led to the investigation, the evidence gathered, and the chilling crime itself.

A Friendship Begins

In 1995, 22-year-old Rachel met 26-year-old Janie Rid in Mill Creek, Utah. Rachel had recently gone through a divorce and was living with her parents, feeling lonely and in need of a friend. Janie, described as nice, sweet, and a bit shy, seemed like the perfect companion. The two women quickly became close, and within a few months, they moved in together. Rachel was eager to leave her parents' house, while Janie, whose home had been broken into, wanted a roommate for safety.

Life Together

Living together, Rachel and Janie shared everything. Rachel, an extrovert, brought Janie out of her shell, introducing her to social activities and nightlife. Janie, the introvert, appeared to appreciate Rachel's efforts but soon became possessive and jealous, especially when Rachel interacted with men. Despite this, Rachel believed Janie was just looking out for her, and their friendship grew stronger.

Challenges and Changes

In January 2010, Rachel suffered a herniated disc, forcing her to quit her job as a paramedic. Around the same time, she discovered she was pregnant. With the baby's father out of the picture, Janie stepped in, offering to help Rachel raise her son, Ryder. Born in 2010, Ryder was later diagnosed with autism. Janie and Rachel effectively co-parented, and Rachel, recognizing her health issues, purchased life insurance with Janie as the beneficiary and legal guardian of Ryder.

Medical Struggles

Rachel's health problems persisted. Between 2015 and 2018, she underwent seven back surgeries, during which Janie took on more responsibilities, caring for Ryder and managing household duties. Janie also administered Rachel's medication, including painkillers. Despite the strain, the two women continued living together, with Janie appearing to be the perfect caretaker.

The Betrayal

In 2018, Rachel received shocking news: Janie was suing her for custody of Ryder. Rachel, already vulnerable from her surgeries and reliant on Janie, was devastated. She called Janie, who confirmed the lawsuit and hung up. Desperate, Rachel contacted the police, who informed her that Janie had also filed a restraining order against her, citing concerns over Rachel's medication use.

Rachel and Ryder moved to a shelter, a challenging environment, especially for Ryder with his autism. Six weeks later, Janie reached out, apologized, and invited them back home. Reluctantly, Rachel accepted, hoping to maintain stability for Ryder.

The Dark Turn

In April 2019, after another surgery, Rachel noticed severe pain and swelling at her incision site. Despite Janie's assurances, Rachel sought medical help. Doctors found a severe MRSA infection, an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, which required emergency treatment. Around this time, Rachel mentioned to Janie, during a true crime documentary discussion, that insulin was an undetectable poison—a comment she would later regret.

The Diabolical Plot

In June 2019, Rachel mysteriously ended up in the hospital with critically low blood sugar levels, a life-threatening condition. Not being diabetic, this puzzled her doctors. It happened again shortly after, with no clear cause found. Rachel began to suspect something was terribly wrong.

The local FBI office was alerted to someone attempting to buy a biological agent, Versa, on the dark web. The buyer was Janie, posing as a science teacher. Authorities intercepted the package and set a trap. Janie collected the fake package, leading to her arrest.

The Investigation Unfolds

Janie initially lied about the package contents but eventually admitted to ordering Versa. Further investigation revealed that Janie had been injecting Rachel with insulin while she slept, causing her hospitalizations. An empty insulin pen with Rachel's DNA was found in Janie's office. Additionally, Janie had infected Rachel's surgical wound with E. coli, leading to the severe infection.

Legal Proceedings and Aftermath

Janie was charged with aggravated abuse of a vulnerable adult, attempted aggravated abuse, and attempted acquisition of a biological weapon. She pled guilty and was sentenced to one to 20 years in prison. Shockingly, Janie was granted parole after serving just 25 months.

Rachel, who had initially defended Janie, was devastated by the betrayal. She and Ryder have since moved on, with Rachel finding unique ways to communicate with her son through music. Despite the trauma, they are rebuilding their lives.

Conclusion

The story of Rachel and Janie is a chilling reminder of how trust can be shattered by those closest to us. Janie's calculated and diabolical actions serve as a stark warning about the potential for evil in those we call friends. As Rachel and Ryder move forward, their resilience and courage stand as a testament to the human spirit's ability to overcome even the darkest of times.
