What happened to Elisa Lam?

Lam’s tragic death is a phenomenon that had been explored massively by the internet. Detectives released suspicious footage in hopes of receiving assistance from the public. The Web sleuths ran like wildfire.

In 2013, Elisa Lam, a twenty-one-year-old Chinese woman, was met with a horrifying death when she traveled to sunny California. It turned into an awful nightmare.

During the investigation, web sleuths spent weeks trying to solve this open-ended case with an overwhelming amount of conspiracy theories. They specifically traveled to the hotel and visited the places she had been to get a glimpse of the lifestyle before her death.

As a twenty-one-year-old, this woman was so easy to relate to. She wanted to travel and she felt lost in this world. She was a young adult with bipolar disorder and depression.

We all just want to see the beauty this world had to offer and get a piece of it.

Her Tumblr page consisted of intense details about the way she felt. She was prescribed a hefty amount of pills to manage her depression and bipolar disorder. She wrote about wanting freedom and how traveling would allow her to move in a positive direction in her life.

Elisa Lam's Stay At Cecil

During her stay in the Cecil, she wrote disturbing notes telling others in the shared hostel to leave.

The staff stated that she would yell in the hallway "I'm crazy and so is LA". The staff moved her to a solo room after they got complaints.

She was considered a disturbance by the staff but, they did not recognize her as their responsibility.

The Beautiful Elisa Lam

Her death shook the world and her story broke a lot of hearts.

We want to explore the world but the dangers around us are terrifying. One of the plethora of horrid things about the Cecil hotel is the amount of terror that went on inside. Sadly notorious killers such as Ricardo Ramirez were known for staying at Hotels such as the Hotel Cecil.

Only locals can know what a place is like so, it makes traveling safe pretty hard. The oddest thing about staying in hotels is that you never know who is there with you. This is a big issue for young people looking for places to stay because it’s hard to find a nice place when don't have a lot of money.

During the investigation, the police released footage of the last time Elisa Lam had been seen. This footage consists of her jumping in and out of an elevator and it's extremely odd. I wish I could explain it. It seems like she may have been speaking to someone, but there was no face or full image of a body.

If you would like to view the footage that the police had released, it's nonviolent, but it's extremely creepy. The footage has been manipulated and so many people interpret it differently things. It's on YouTube and included in the Netflix documentary.

There are an endless amount of conspiracy theories debating whether the staff was involved. Or If the murderer was other people in the neighborhood or other guests in the Cecil Hotel.

The amount of theories in this crime story is overbearing.

Here are some of the many conspiracy theories:

Why did she walk into the hotel with a box of books with two men?

-I feel like this could be a good theory because they knew where she lived. When the detectives met the suspects they concluded that those individuals could not have been involved for reasons they chose not to share.

Was anybody in the elevator with her? Was she talking to someone?

- She was acting extremely odd at the elevator and looked like she was terrified of something or someone. Many people believe the elevator footage was manipulated by the staff because of the way the speed was.

Did she take dangerous drugs because they were easily accessible?

-Many wonder why she would jump into a water tank. Some conclude that she was depressed and maybe used drugs to ease her depression. Which ultimately could have resulted in her acting differently than she normally would.

Did she commit suicide?

-She was depressed and a lot of her written rants were regarding her depression

Was the LAPD involved?

-They changed their outcome of the case from unknown death to accidental drowning which made a lot of people confused and wonder if the cops were even trying.

Was she a part of the government?

-This was suggested after a tuberculosis test was named LAM-ELISA.

Was she murdered?

-Web sleuths wondered how someone could potentially jump inside of a water tank and then close the lid from the outside and drown. Aside from her mental illness, it was nearly impossible to believe she would choose to jump inside a water tank.

These theories had many people confused. Many including detectives wondered how she got up there and why.

Beyoncé- I Was Here

I dedicate this song to Elisa Lam, you will never be forgotten.

Rest In Peace, Elisa Lam

Lam had been missing for two entire weeks before she was found inside the water tank on top of the hotel. The maintenance man checked the tank after the hotel guests complained about the water pressure being low.

When detectives found out that she had stopped taking her pills they concluded that her mental state was not okay and at first concluded this death was suicide.

They stated that her cause of death was accidental drowning and it may have correlated with her bipolar disorder. The police did not believe that there was foul play based on the evidence they had.

There were no signs of torture or any other humans bodily functions. She was naked in the tank but there were no signs of assault from the sexual assault kit.

An autopsy was unable to show any type of drugs in her system. They shared that the toxicology report showed she was not taking the medications prescribed for her illnesses.

The Police stated that there was no DNA indicating someone was with her.

People on the internet do not believe that this was an accidental death. Web sleuths went over the autopsy and some believe the police just wanted to close the case because they had something to hide.

It was odd that she was found faced up but others believed that her body may have moved against the water pressure.

The lid was at first assumed to be closed which made it hard for people to believe that this was a homicide. After the facts came out that the hatch was open it made others realize that she may have jumped in.

The police concluded that she was going through an intense mental breakdown. This caused her to hallucinate and could have led her to want to hide in the water tank from whatever she was hallucinating from.

When I was looking over the many articles, I read a lot of blogs that were disgusted by the Netflix's documentary. One stated that Elisa Lam was a sad mental health case and her last worst moments should not be on display. They believe that her family should be able to grieve her loss and not have her displayed as creepy for Netflix financial gain.

Some people are disgusted by her online portrayal because she had a major illness that ended her life.

She was used as an example of what could go wrong when traveling, when sometimes things just go wrong. The facts on this case have been tossed around by blogs and people that want fame off learning and “investigating” her death.

I believe that the Netflix documentary wanted to share an investigation that got taken over by the public.

It may have gone too far.

Ultimately I am unsure on where to lay the blame, but I do know that this Woman deserved help in her time of need. I hope that everyone stays safe and that the Lam family can find peace. This story will be one I will not forget and I know others will not as well.
