[2011 | West Yorkshire, England]

In a quiet town in West Yorkshire, Michelina Lewandowska (27) was preparing to head out for a shopping trip with her partner, Marcin Kasprza (25).

She was in the bathroom, putting on her makeup when she heard her partner returned home. He was talking to a friend, Patryk Borys. Marcin pulled out a Taser, telling her that he wanted to demonstrate how it works, with the ultimate goal of betraying her and tasering her neck.

She tried fighting back, but she was overpowered by her bodybuilder partner. The 300,000-volt electric current left her incapacitated but conscious.

They bound and gagged her with tape and shoved her into a cardboard box. They then drove her to the woods. Michelina could hear her deepest fear coming true as soil being thrown over the box.

She was being buried alive!

It was pitch black and only the sound of spade digging and soil falling on top of the box rang in her ears. She was terrified to try to escape, fearing that they would attack her.

She tried her best to keep calm, breathing shallowly, fearing that she would run out of air. She thought of her three-year-old son who would grow up without a mother and the willpower to get out alive for her son.

She had little time left in the confined space as the oxygen level was decreasing rapidly. She had nothing with her, no tools whatsoever. Ironically, the only object that was sharp enough was a diamond ring given by the person who buried her alive.

Desperately, she sliced the tapes away with it and cut the cardboard box. In court, she said,

“I started to tear the box apart. I was focusing on the opening I had just made. Soil was getting in. My face was getting dirty. I could see some black sky and leaves. I was so exhausted.”

After almost an hour of being buried alive, she was able to claw her way out of the box that was covered with earth and an 88lb tree branch. She stumbled upon a road and was flagged down by a motorist who then called the police.

In 15 minutes, police arrived. Together with Michelina, they returned to the site and found the shallow grave and her card box coffin.

It didn’t take long to arrest Marcin Kasprzak and Patryk Borys. Both denied attempting to murder her. Marcin’s defense team suggested that Marcin only intended to scare her as there were two hand holes which that she could use to breathe. However, while Michelina was buried, Marcin withdrew £500 from her bank account. Michelina said,

“I can tell you now that they were not left especially or intentionally for me to live.”

Prosecutors deduced that the likely motive behind this heinous act was to secure custody of their three-year-old son, Jakub.

Michelina and Marcin met in Poland back in 2005. They migrated together to England for work, and 3 years later, they got engaged. But the relationship turned sour after Michelina gave birth to their son.

Allegedly, Marcin would frequent a gym at least five times a day and become addicted to anabolic steroids, which caused him to have sudden violent outbursts. He grew resentful of Michelina and no longer wanted her to live with him in his parents’ home. In court, the prosecution said,

“In a nutshell, this case is about a young man who got bored with his partner, the mother of his child, and he decided to get rid of her.”

Patryk Borys was only 17 years old at the time, so he was placed in a juvenile institution. Marcin Kasprza, however, was convicted of kidnapping and attempted murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
