I hate working 9-5 & being productive.

I'm sorry, Dolly Parton. It had to be said.

This is honestly just a rant on why I don't want to spend the rest of my life, doing something I completely hate to survive. It's not me feeling entitled, I just generally believe working these jobs is tiresome, damaging to mental health, and wastes people's time.

I have always hated working. I never saw anything good about it, and whole-heartedly saw myself doing something different. When I was fired from my job at a fast food place when I was 18, I turned to podcast tried to start my own podcast on Anchor. I had an idea and wanted to grow from there. Then, I decided to get a job and implement what I made into my savings. But while being there, I saw favoritism and toxic management that was displayed at the job. But, I decided to just bear it. Why? Because this is something adults just did. "That's how life is," they would say as I asked.

My Personal Thoughts on Productivity Culture

I understand a form of cleanliness, organization, and goal setting is beneficial and can help with providing more structure in your life. But productivity culture has become more and more damaging, as it sets unrealistic goals and tips, that may be leaving people who follow the advice, tired and overwhelmed.

I've come across videos, explaining how to wake up as early as 3 am, and check everything off of your list such as working out, doing chores, and working on a side hustle all before clocking in for work. Though I get why that could be beneficial, I find that also to be a bit problematic.

I actually wrote an article, talking about why waking up at 3 am was helpful for me. And at first, it was. But then, it became so draining to the point where I would be nodding off to sleep before 12:30 in the afternoon. I feel admitting this would be a lot better than putting on a fake smile and saying "I love working and waking up early" because I don't.

I would rather be my own boss, without tipping my big toe in the toxic pool of productivity.

My Time and Work Is More Than Just a Few Dollars an Hour

I genuinely think that people working 40 hours a week, and giving your time and energy to work should allow you to get paid WAY MORE than what most places are paying their employees.

Now I'm starting to understand why people would rather work at home, or do more as a freelance than to work at these particular jobs. While driving around, I see a lot of "Now Hiring" signs, seeing a lot of jobs are understaffed due to workers that found a better paying job or wanted to pursue something else.

Toxic Work Environment & Lack of Appreciation

There are a plethora of reasons why some of these workplaces aren't the greatest. One of the reasons can be due to a toxic work environment, and a lack of appreciation for the time of effort spend at work.

Horrible management is something I have dealt with in the past. I have also experienced working with people who didn't appreciate the effort put into what I or other co-workers did. And it would always result in people quitting. Of course!

I've always been told to just put up with it since it's something that pays your bills but there is only so much that people can take.

So what do I do?

I know it's easier said than done to get started with a freelance idea or to even get started with an online job without the proper equipment. My advice is to simply make a few investments in your future. It's easy to impulsively quit, but without an idea and some money to back up the plan to either work at home or start a business, you might find yourself in a tight spot. Set a deadline, and take the time to achieve your short-term goals. This is advice I need to be taking as well!
