Alexander the Great part 5

Part 5

Early Signs of Greatness

Even as a child, Alexander exhibited remarkable traits that hinted at his future greatness. Plutarch recounts a story from Alexander's childhood that exemplifies his courage and determination. When he was just ten years old, a Thessalian trader brought a magnificent horse named Bucephalus to Philip, offering to sell it for a substantial sum. The horse, however, was wild and unmanageable, causing Philip to dismiss it as useless.

Young Alexander, observing the scene, declared that he could tame the horse. Initially skeptical, Philip allowed his son to try. Alexander, noticing that Bucephalus was afraid of his own shadow, turned the horse to face the sun so that its shadow fell behind it. With patience and skill, Alexander calmed Bucephalus and successfully mounted him. This feat impressed Philip greatly, who remarked, "My boy, you must find a kingdom big enough for your ambitions. Macedonia is too small for you."

This episode with Bucephalus foreshadowed Alexander's exceptional qualities: his keen observation, understanding of others' fears, and ability to achieve what seemed impossible. Bucephalus would remain Alexander's trusted steed throughout his military campaigns, symbolizing the bond between the young king and his aspirations.
