Alexander the Great part 38

Part 38

By Daily ReadPublished about a month ago 1 min read

Despite the determined resistance, Alexander's persistence and strategic ingenuity eventually paid off. He identified weaker sections of the wall and concentrated his forces on these points, gradually wearing down the defenders. After several months of relentless pressure, Alexander's forces managed to breach the city walls, leading to intense street fighting. Memnon and Orontobates, recognizing the inevitable fall of the city, ordered a retreat, leaving Halicarnassus to Alexander.

The capture of Halicarnassus was a significant victory for Alexander. It eliminated a major Persian stronghold and secured his control over the southwestern coast of Asia Minor. The victory also demoralized Persian forces in the region and demonstrated Alexander's ability to conquer even the most well-defended cities.
