The Battle of Granicus: A Detailed Account

#### Prelude to the Battle

In the spring of 334 BCE, Alexander the Great embarked on his ambitious campaign to conquer the Persian Empire. Crossing the Hellespont (modern-day Dardanelles) into Asia Minor, Alexander faced his first major challenge at the Granicus River. This battle would set the tone for his campaign and test the mettle of his army against the vast Persian forces.

Alexander's army, approximately 40,000 strong, consisted of Macedonian phalanxes, Greek hoplites, archers, and a highly effective cavalry. The Persian satraps, aware of Alexander's approach, had assembled a formidable force to counter the Macedonian invasion. The Persians chose a strategic position on the far bank of the Granicus River, utilizing the natural barrier to their advantage. Their forces included cavalry, infantry, and Greek mercenaries, aiming to thwart Alexander's crossing and deliver a decisive blow.
