Preparing for Conquest
With Greece pacified, Alexander turned his attention to the grand ambition that he inherited from his father: the conquest of the Persian Empire. The League of Corinth, established by Philip, provided Alexander with a ready coalition of Greek states that pledged their support for the campaign against Persia.
Alexander's preparations for the invasion of Persia involved meticulous planning and mobilization. He assembled an army of approximately 40,000 soldiers, including Macedonian phalanxes, Greek hoplites, and cavalry units. He also ensured the logistical support necessary for a long and arduous campaign, including supply lines and funding.
In the spring of 334 BCE, Alexander crossed the Hellespont (modern-day Dardanelles) into Asia Minor, marking the beginning of his legendary campaign. His first major engagement, the Battle of Granicus, would set the tone for the extraordinary series of victories that followed.
