How to get Kindle Books for free (legally)

Discover the Best Methods for Accessing Free Kindle Books

By Jodie PhamPublished 12 days ago 4 min read

I absolutely love reading. Since getting my Kindle Paperwhite, I can't imagine going back to physical books. It saves space in my house, and I can read in bed at night without needing a light.

Initially, I was hesitant to switch to a Kindle because I enjoyed borrowing books from the library for free. I worried that Kindle books would be too expensive.

But that's not the case! I hardly ever pay for Kindle books now and always have something to read. Here's how I get Kindle books for free:

FREE KINDLE BOOKS FROM AMAZON

Since I love to read free Kindle books, I also enjoy finding free ebooks for my readers. Every day, I check Amazon and post a new free Kindle book on my site. Given my interest in inspirational fiction, the books I share tend to be from this genre.

Here's my secret for finding free Kindle books on Amazon in any genre: regularly check the Top 100 Free Kindle Books in the Kindle store. This list is updated frequently and features a wide variety of genres. To find books that match your preferences, you can sort the list by genre, narrowing down the selection to fit your tastes. By doing this, you can discover a ton of free books to enjoy and share with others. You just need an Amazon account to "buy" the books for free.

If you have an Amazon Prime membership, Prime members can also check out over a thousand Kindle books for FREE with Prime Reading. There are no due dates, and it includes current and former best sellers.

You could also sign up for a 2-month free trial of Kindle Unlimited which includes unlimited reading of books and magazines and listening to audiobooks as part of the membership.

CHECK OUT KINDLE BOOKS FROM YOUR LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARY

While I love the FREE Kindle books from Amazon, they tend to have the first book in a series (to entice you to buy the rest of the series) or some older Kindle books. So, when I want to read currently popular books, newer releases, or an entire series, I'll check out my local library’s free Kindle books through the Overdrive app.

Using Overdrive is simple. First, search for books online through your library’s Overdrive collection. Once you find a book you like, you can check it out digitally. You’ll then be redirected to Amazon’s website to add the book to your Kindle device. The book will automatically download the next time your device connects to WiFi.

The best part is that at the end of your checkout period (usually 2 or 3 weeks, depending on your library), the Kindle book will disappear from your device, so you don’t have to worry about late fees. This way, you can enjoy a wide range of books without spending a dime or stressing about returning them on time.

GET BOOKS FROM THE PUBLIC DOMAIN

There are tons of books that are available for FREE in the public domain. Today you can select from millions of free books from the comfort of your couch in every subject imaginable as long as your wifi holds up. These books are completely legal and free to download being either in the public domain or licensed with some form of creative commons license. There are likely more books on your favorite subjects than you will ever be able to read in your lifetime.

If you grow tired from reading, there are also wide selections of free audiobooks and ways you can get involved in making free audiobooks to share with others.

So, there are tons of free books available to download in the public domain. One good site to find public domain books is Loyal Books. Another good site is Project Gutenberg, which has over 60,000 free books listed at last count.

You can download the book in the .mobi format or as pdf files and then email the file to your Kindle email address.

BORROW FROM A FRIEND (OR NOT!)

Did you know that you can lend many of your Kindle books? Just visit the book's page on Amazon, and you'll see a yellow stripe at the top indicating when you ordered the book. If the book is eligible for lending, there will be a link in that yellow stripe allowing you to loan the book to anyone you choose. However, keep in mind that you can only lend each Kindle book once through the Kindle Owners' Lending Library.

You can also use the website BookLending.com to both borrow and loan Kindle books from strangers. This process is completely free and managed through the site. You’ll get your book back on your device in about 14 days, risk-free.

Interestingly, you don’t actually need a Kindle e-reader to enjoy Kindle books. You can download the free Kindle app onto your phone, tablet, or computer. This app is available in the Apple App Store and Google Play. This flexibility allows you to read Kindle books on various devices, making it easier than ever to enjoy your favorite books anywhere, anytime.

Since getting my Kindle Paperwhite, I’ve discovered so many convenient features like these, making it hard to go back to reading physical books. Plus, the Kindle saves storage space in my house, and I can read in bed without needing a light. Initially, I was hesitant to switch to Kindle because I liked getting free books from the library and worried Kindle books would be too expensive. But with all these options, Kindle reading has become an affordable and suitable nb choice.

How about you? Do you like FREE Kindle books? Where is your favorite place to find them?
