Alexander the Great part 66

Part 66

By Daily ReadPublished about a month ago 1 min read

Aftermath and Consequences

The victory at Gaugamela was decisive. It marked the effective end of Persian resistance and the beginning of Alexander’s dominance over the Persian Empire. Darius fled eastward but was later betrayed and killed by his own satraps. With no credible opposition left, Alexander marched unopposed into the Persian heartlands, including the capitals of Babylon, Susa, and Persepolis.

In Babylon, Alexander was greeted as a liberator. He spared the city from plunder, a move that contrasted sharply with his later actions in Persepolis, where he allowed his troops to loot and burn the city as retribution for past Persian invasions of Greece. This act of destruction, however, was also symbolic, demonstrating the complete subjugation of the Persian Empire.
