Exfoliation and Its Benefits To Your Skin

What happens to your skin if you don't exfoliate?

Your skin is your biggest organ. It is also one of the most important organs that you have. When you take care of your skin, you are helping to take care of all the other parts of your body. Clear, radiant skin is a sign that you are doing something right, genetics aside.

So one of the ways in which you take care of your skin, in addition to good food and drink as well as washing your body on a regular basis is exfoliating.

WHAT IS EXFOLIATION?

Exfoliation is the process of getting rid of old and dead skin cells, so as to make room for new and alive skin cells. When you exfoliate, you help reveal the newer skin cells underneath the surface, leaving your skin feeling softer and more vibrant. When people think of exfoliants, they often think about scrubs because they are made with a coarse ingredient, like salt or sugar, to literally scrub the skin.

Interesting Exfoliation Facts

  • Your body loses 30,000 dead skin cells a minute???
  • You don’t notice or feel it, but your body is constantly eliminating dead skin cells to replace them with new ones. Although your body gets rid of dead skin cells naturally, they can still stick around for too long and cause breakouts and a dull, lackluster complexion.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DON'T EXFOLIATE?

1) Lack of exfoliation leads to build up of dead skin cells, and could result into dry, dull, patchy, flaky skin, clogged pores, with uneven skin tone. Exfoliation helps to keep skin clean and unclogged, lack of which are the main reasons of blackheads and whiteheads.

2) Lack of exfoliating ensures that your skin care products don't work because as dead skin layers up, applying moisturizers, serums and other products on top of that, results into no better skin.

3) Lack of exfoliating leads to aging skin. Without removal of dead skin, the new regenerated skin keeps hidden beneath and dead skin cells robs you of your youthful glow.

4) Your makeup can look terrible on your face if you don't exfoliate regularly. If you don’t exfoliate regularly, your skin tends to get dry and as a result makeup never looks natural. Your skin looks drier and makeup looks fake.

5) Not exfoliating can give germs and bacteria place to breed and grow and result into rashes and infections. To get rid of germs which settle into your pores, dirt hidden beneath your skin, exfoliation is necessary especially.

WHAT SHOULD YOU USE TO EXFOLIATE?

When exfoliating you should consider using the following four ingredients:

Oatmeal: Oatmeal is a gentle exfoliant that also cleanses and soothes the skin.

Honey: Honey is used to bind exfoliants together to form a scrub. It also reduces inflammation which can help with acne and eczema.

Himalayan salt: Himalayan salt which is high in magnesium, reduces skin inflammation (from acne or eczema) and detoxes the skin. The salt granules are large and tough enough to remove dead skin and soften hard skin.

Sugar: Different types of sugar should be used depending upon what you're exfoliating. For your face, it should be brown sugar, for your body it should be something like granulated sugar. Brown sugar is the least abrasive making it a good choice for sensitive skin and facial scrubs. Pure cane sugar is good for your body but not your face if you have sensitive skin. To be on the safe side, just use brown sugar on your face and all other types of sugar for your body.

So, the bottom line is, for good looking skin, exfoliation is a necessity that your skin deserves.
