Songs of my Life

A playlist of Chaos

I was raised on Friday nights filled with vinyl and CDs, of ballads, hits, classics and nostalgic melodies. My parents, sister, and I would dim the lights, pick an album and spend the night lost in the tunes. We had a wall of CD's a meter long and 2 shelves high. At one point I spent hours alphebetising them all, but I think I have up halfway through.

My parents both loved Country; though they had their different waves, I knew the words to most the songs before I left third grade.

Was belted nice and loud, followed by,

This made my mother very proud.

We also had the classics like The Beatles,

Though it's kinda hard to choose

and

I guess to name just two. Though we had several of their albums, I remember one vinyl in particular that I would gravitate to, but we always had to play both sides because I had a favorite on side A and one on side B.

There were the songs my parents learned to regret that I had found,

Such as this entire album that we had on cassette tape. It was childish and stupid and my sister and I would sing and dance like fools to each of them.

and probably another would be,

That I proudly, and ignorantly, would belt out at just 12, much to my mothers chagrin.

After that my music taste mingled with that of friends, the classics and the country songs at some point began to end. Instead, I moved to other styles like:

and every other song on this album for Laura Marling. My best frined and I would go on walks with an earbud in each, arms linked humming away to each song. I also had a bit of a thing for P!nk, particularly,

that I distinctly remember scream-singing at the beach once whilst on a sugar high. Another I sang a lot was,

For a little while, younger me, was convinced she was from Australia despite singing about Presidents.

I hit my 'emo' phase pretty late in life in comparison to the rest with the top few representations of that phase being,

and once again the rest of the album cause you cannot have just one, and also,

It's safe to say I was well into my late teen depression when this one hit my charts.

There was a time there when I fell in love with things little less 'mainstream' and started to listen to The Killers, specifically;

and

Then a little more left of field with,

I was introduced to musicals at some point and of COURSE Hamilton made the cut,

Excuse the spam but these three are my favorites.

After school, and uni, and teen anxt were behind me I spent some time in Canada and was gifted a few playlists where some new favourites came to light. Some are strange and whimsical and silly and others tear at my heart.

This one must be yelled in the car,

to be fair, this one should also be yelled in the car,

Ok most, if not all, of these songs are from playlists curated to be sung in the car, we drove the width of Canada - twice. Oh and another musical entered the mix, this one I play as a guilty pleasure.

This one I CANNOT listen to without sobbing,

Oh and this one was a random find that I fell in love with,

Then there are the ones I can blame TikTok or Spotify radio for, there are a few that are in no way connected other than the method in which they came to me,

We can also dive into the strange tangent that is my love or pirate, tavern, viking and shanty music - I lump these together cause they all gain a simmilr reaction when people ask you what you're listening to and you tell them the truth.

So yeah, I think it is safe to say that my music taste is broad and impressionable, chaotic and ever changing, kind of like me. This list mostly reflects the good times as I find music is a great channel for that and I tend to forget what music I listen too when I am perhaps not in the best place.

Not listed are all the lyricless tracks that I listen to when working or working out but I feel that they are less of a concious choice.

I hoe you enjoy some of these, I know a number of them are not for everyone though!

This list is awesome! I really like how the songs are integrated in the article! Also, Through Glass by Stone Sour and Viking music are some of my jams, too!
